James P. Jones is Distinguished Teaching Professor of History at Florida State University where he has taught for forty-four years. Jones has published nine books and forty articles, primarily about the American Civil War. He has written a two volume biography of nineteenh century Illinois political and military leader John A. Logan. The two books: "Black Jack:" John A. Logan and Southern Illinois in the Civil War Era, and John A. Logan, Stalwart Republican from Illinois, were originally published by the University Presses of Florida. They have recently been re-issued by the the Southern Illinois University Press.
Jones' work, Yankees Blitzkrieg: Wilson's Raid through Alabama and Georgia, first published by the University of Georgia Press in 1976, was re-issued in 2000 by the University of Kentucky Press. Yankee Blitzkrieg, wrote one reviwer, "is the standard scholarly study of the raid....it is significant, well-written, and remarkably enduring in interpretation." Jones' current project, to be published by the Southern Illinois University Press, is tentatively entitled, "Faces of Conflict: Illinois Soldiers and the Civil War." The 1861-65 struggle was the first important experience of the American people to be photographed. A major collection of pictures of Prairie State soldiers in the Illinois State Historical Library has just become available. The images show young Illinois soldiers on their way to battle, in the field in the South and as proud veterans years after the final trumpet had sounded. Jones is selecting the images to be included and will author the accompanying text. His residency at the LES Center was spent in identification of archival photographs. |
